1. Before class exercises
Exercise 1: Practise listening
Kitchen:
Birds out the window: high pitch, soft dynamic, in different areas, short duration
Trees outside: rustling leaves
Neighbour’s backyard: kid’s squealing, high pitched, laughing, soft background noise
Balcony:
Waves: crashing in distance, slow tempo, sudden change when waves crash, constant sound of the tides
Cars driving past: gradually rises in loud dynamic as it passes, then when passes is soft again.
Exercise 2: Recording sounds
2. The Shining
Types of sounds e.g. music, enactment, sound effects, recordings:
Starts with a high pitch eerie noise, so we know danger is coming. Danny’s wheels tricycle, gong/symbols sounds when he reaches the girls, establish these twins aren’t good.
Structure of edits e.g. overlaid, fade in/out:
The gong sound edited in as Danny turns the corner, establishes a fearful tone. When the film switches between the girls alive and dead, the music gets louder then fades out again.
Editing patterns e.g. repetition, gaps/ silence:
The editing on the twin’s voices, stretched out, more reverb to give them a supernatural tone.
What kind of images conjured up in your mind?
I get evil connotation with the suspenseful music, accompanied by the eerie voice of the twins
